Absences

Attendance is important to the educational program at St. Jude Catholic School. Regular attendance not only contributes to spiritual development and academic achievement, but also to the development of dependability and responsibility. Excused absences with make-up privileges are defined as, but not limited to: personal illness, health/dental appointments, bereavement, quarantine, family emergencies, and written requests approved in advance by the principal.

When a student is absent from school, parents should call the school office by 9:00am each day of the absence. If the office does not receive a call, parent/guardian will be contacted. If upon contact with parent/guardian we learn that the student was dropped off at school, we will do an immediate search of the building. If student is missing, the police will be contacted.

Excused Absence

Students may be absent due to illness, accident, quarantine, attendance at the funeral services of a member of the student’s family, or other similar events. If an absence due to illness will exceed five days, the parent/guardian must provide the school with a letter from a physician detailing the medical reason for the extended absence. Teachers and students will work together to make up any missed schoolwork or testing.

Absence for Other Reasons

The school calendar provides for extended weekends throughout the school year. Parents are strongly encouraged to schedule trips or family outings during these times to avoid the need to make up missed schoolwork.

Make-Up Schoolwork

Students will have extra time to make up schoolwork missed when absent.  For every one day the student is absent, he/she has one day in which to make up assignments. For example, if the student was absent for three (3) days, he/she has three (3) days in which to complete his/her make-up schoolwork.

Absence During the School Day

Students needing medical appointments during school hours require a written note by the parent.  Parents are required to sign out their child. If the child returns to school during the same school day, he/she must be signed back into school in the office. Students who are away from school for an appointment for three (3) hours or more will be counted as absent for half of a day.
