Invest in Kids Act: Donor Information
We are excited to share with you an unprecedented opportunity for Catholic education. The Illinois House and Senate recently passed an education funding bill which includes a new program for scholarships for students in private schools. Under the Invest in Kids Act, individuals and corporations who choose to donate to this fund are eligible for a significant tax credit.
How it works:
-Individuals and corporations make donations to Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO) that will distribute scholarships to qualified students. Individuals (but not corporations) may designate their donation to an individual school or subset of schools, such as St. Jude Catholic School and Peoria Notre Dame high school
-Individual and corporate donors would receive a 75 percent state tax credit, up to $1 million, for their donation.
-Students with qualifying financial need will receive these scholarships beginning with the 2018/2019 school year. Scholarships will be issued for as much as 100% of the cost of tuition and fees, making Catholic education a possibility for many.
Tax credits will be available on a first come, first serve basis beginning January 2, 2018, but donors must have a MyTax Illinois account set up prior to January 1st to reserve their tax credit. This is a very simple online applications process, but requires a mailed response from the State of Illinois. Interested donors are encouraged to create this account immediately. There is a cap on the amount of tax credit the state will issue, and strong interest may cause this cap to be reached very quickly.
Visit the Diocesan website at cdop.org and select Catholic Education to learn more. The State of Illinois has also posted information on the program: https://www2.illinois.gov/IISNews/15033-IDOR_Invest_in_Kids_Act_Release.pdf
The school office will be happy to help with any questions, or you may contact Mr. Russ Courter, Director of Diocesan Parish and School Finances (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Dr. Susan Stolt, Associate Superintendent of Diocesan Schools (email@example.com) or call them at (309) 671-1550 for more specific information.
